Fish care · Essential steps

How to unhook and handle a trout

Prepare before lifting the trout: wet your hands, keep the net in the water, support the fish without squeezing and have your unhooking tool ready. If it will be released, minimize time out of the water.

Before touching the fish

Simple preparation prevents searching for tools while the fish waits.

  • Wet your hands.
  • Keep the trout in the net and in the water while preparing.
  • Have pliers and the camera ready.
  • Never touch the gills.

Removing the hook

Keep the fish supported and back the hook out along its entry angle. If it is deeply hooked or the situation is difficult, your guide chooses the option that limits handling.

The release

Place the trout in calm, oxygenated water facing the current and support it gently. Let it swim away on its own. Release and harvest decisions always follow local regulations.
