Wild speckled trout

Brook trout fishing in the Laurentians

Yes — you can still catch wild brook trout about 1 h 30 to 1 h 50 from Montreal. In the Laurentians and Lanaudière, small forest rivers and creeks still hold native speckled trout, usually 6 to 12 inches, with bigger fish sitting in the deeper pools. Trips run with ultralight spinning gear, fly gear, or drifted bait, depending on your experience.

Where brook trout actually hold in a river

Brook trout want three things: oxygen, shade and cover. The pool below a riffle, undercut banks carved by the current, sunken logs, and the mouths of colder tributaries are where the active fish stack up.

In midsummer, as the water warms, they move toward cold springs and deeper pools. After a good rain they push back up into the current and feed far more aggressively — those are usually our best days of the season.

The techniques we use

  • Ultralight spinning: small inline spinners, micro soft plastics, light rod and thin line.
  • Drifted bait (pêche au toc): the most natural presentation in a tight creek.
  • Fly fishing: dry flies during a hatch, nymphs the rest of the time.
  • A quiet approach: we wade slowly and fish upstream so the trout never see us coming.

Season and conditions

Cool, well-oxygenated water is everything. Spring and early summer are prime in the creeks; late summer trips move to colder, spring-fed sections. We pick the sector the morning of the trip based on flow, water temperature and what produced on our most recent outings.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my own gear for brook trout?
No. Rods, reels, lures and a net can be provided on request — just mention it when you book. Bring your own rod if you have one you like.
How big do the brook trout get?
Most wild speckled trout run 6 to 12 inches. Some pools hold noticeably bigger fish, and every season produces a few surprises.
Is brook trout fishing good for a first-time angler?
It is the best possible introduction. The fish are willing, the water is small and readable, and everything is taught on the spot with no experience required.
