Practical guide
Where to fish trout near Montreal
The Laurentians and Lanaudière offer wild trout fishing generally 1 h 30 to 1 h 50 from Montreal without traffic. Depending on the sector and the season you can target brook trout, brown trout, lake trout and landlocked salmon, in rivers, creeks and lakes.
Public land, zecs and outfitters
Accessible water exists on public land, in controlled harvest zones (zecs) and in wildlife reserves. Each territory has its own regulations, dates and sometimes quotas — always check the rules for the sector before you go.
Which species, and when
- Brook trout: spring through fall, best in cool water and after rain.
- Brown trout: early morning, evening, and in slightly stained water.
- Lake trout: shallow in spring and fall, deep in summer.
- Landlocked salmon: a short river window, heavily flow-dependent.
Why exact spots are not published
Small wild populations are fragile — a few weeks of concentrated pressure can empty a pool. We do not publish coordinates. What we share is the method, and on a guided day, direct access to water that has been worked for years.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I fish trout less than 2 hours from Montreal?
- Yes. Most of the sectors we fish in the Laurentians and Lanaudière are about 1 h 30 to 1 h 50 of driving without traffic.
- Do I need waders?
- Not necessarily. Many sectors can be fished in water shoes. Waders help in spring, when the water is cold and high.
- What licence do I need?
- A Quebec sport fishing licence, available online or in stores. It also covers landlocked salmon (freshwater salmon).
