What to bring for Quebec trout fishing
For Quebec trout, bring the required fishing licence, weather-appropriate clothing, suitable footwear, water and lunch; ask the guide about gear availability and rental before departure. For Ontario salmon, bring your own fishing gear, waders and wading boots; equipment is not provided.
Quebec trout: absolute must-haves
- A valid Quebec sport fishing licence (online or in store).
- Water shoes or old sneakers — or waders if you own a pair.
- Layered clothing: the forest runs cooler than the city.
- Water, lunch and snacks.
- Insect repellent.
- Polarized sunglasses — they completely change how you read the water.
Trout spinning tackle and recommended lures
- Light or ultralight rod, small spinning reel and 4–6 lb fluorocarbon; up to 8 lb when conditions call for it.
- Small Mepps #1 or #2 spinners: red, blue, pink, pink-and-blue or natural colours.
- Small crankbaits and swimbaits imitating trout, smelt or other small baitfish.
- Imitation salmon eggs on a #8 hook, alone or in small clusters, where permitted.
Trout fly fishing and drifted bait
A #5 or #6 fly rod is a good compromise for our rivers. A #7 or #8 can also work if that is what you own; ask before buying another rod. The guide helps select flies for the current, depth and insects present.
- A few dry flies, nymphs and small streamers, leaders and spare tippet.
- For drifted bait: small floats, #6 and #8 hooks, tiny split shot, worms and 4–6 lb fluorocarbon where regulations permit.
- Send a photo of your tackle before departure so the guide can confirm what is suitable.
Useful but optional
- Your favourite rod, if you have one.
- A small backpack or chest pack.
- A light waterproof shell.
- A towel and dry clothes left in the car.
- Your phone in a waterproof pouch for photos.
What you do not need to buy
For Quebec trout, you do not need to buy an expensive setup before your first trip. We start with what you own; ask the guide about gear availability and rental in advance. This does not apply to Ontario salmon: your own fishing equipment, waders and wading boots are required.

Frequently asked questions
- Where do I buy a Quebec fishing licence?
- Online on the Government of Quebec website, or in store at most sporting goods retailers and big-box stores.
- What if it rains?
- Rain is often excellent for trout. We fish anyway, unless there are thunderstorms or unsafe conditions — then we reschedule.
