Spinning for beginners

Spinning is the most accessible way to start trout fishing. A light rod, small reel and a few lures are enough. You do not need to cast far in a river: accuracy and a natural presentation matter more.

The basic cast

A short, controlled motion is usually more accurate than a hard swing.

  • Hold the rod lightly and keep your index finger near the line.
  • Open the bail, hold the line, and bring the rod behind your shoulder.
  • Cast smoothly at the target and release as the rod points toward it.
  • Close the bail by hand and stay in contact with the lure.

Presenting a lure in current

Cast slightly upstream or across, then let the current help the lure. Retrieve only fast enough to make it work.

Normal beginner mistakes

  • Trying to cast too far.
  • Reeling too quickly.
  • Leaving too much slack.
  • Repeating the same angle without adjusting.
