3 Chinook Salmon in Ontario Zone 17 — October 3, 2026 Report

Updated:

Ontario Zone 17 | 1 river + 1 creek | 3 anglers | 3 Chinook released

Summary

On October 3, 2026, three anglers caught and released three Chinook salmon in a river and a creek in Ontario’s Zone 17. After the general Pacific salmon season closed on September 30, only certain sections with fall exceptions remained open. The anglers observed fewer salmon in the accessible sections than in September. Regional conditions were cool and sunny, with about 8–10 °C in the morning, pressure around 1026–1028 hPa and a last-quarter moon at about 51% illumination.

On Saturday, October 3, 2026, three anglers explored a river and a creek in Ontario’s Zone 17, looking for Chinook salmon during the fall run.

Early-October regulations change fishing in this region considerably. The general Pacific salmon season ends on September 30, closing many sections higher up in the tributaries. Some lower sections, however, remain legally accessible thanks to Ontario’s extended seasons.

We therefore fished only in legally open sections.

Trip results

  • 3 anglers
  • 1 river explored
  • 1 creek explored
  • 3 Chinook salmon caught
  • 3 fish released

Compared with some September trips, we observed fewer salmon in the sections open to fishing. This does not necessarily mean the overall Chinook population has declined: by early October, a large share of the fish may already be higher up in the systems, including in sections now closed or protected.

This distinction matters. This report documents what we observed in the open sections, not a scientific estimate of the total population.

Different fishing after September 30

In Zone 17, the regulation change completely transforms early-October strategy. The general season for Pacific salmon and rainbow trout ends on September 30. Ontario does, however, keep some fall fishing opportunities in the lower parts of Lake Ontario tributaries.

In the Regional Municipality of Durham, sections between Highway 2 and the south side of the CNR right-of-way stay open until December 31, while waters between the CNR and Lake Ontario are open year-round for Atlantic salmon, brown trout, Pacific salmon and rainbow trout.

In Northumberland County, waters downstream of Highway 2 also have an extended fall season, with some specific exceptions.

The Ganaraska is one important exception: the section between the Jocelyn Street bridge and the CNR is a sanctuary closed to all fishing from September 1 to October 14, in particular to protect migrating Chinook during their peak run.

Conditions on October 3, 2026

Because we don’t publish the exact river, it would be misleading to attribute a single station’s weather reading to the precise fishing spot. Regional observations and archives around the Port Hope–Oshawa corridor do, however, show a cool and mostly sunny day.

Regional temperature
About 8–10 °C in the morning, rising to around 16–18 °C in the afternoon depending on the area. North Oshawa hourly data show about 8 °C at daybreak and around 16 °C in the afternoon.
Sky
Mostly sunny to clear along the Lake Ontario corridor. Port Hope had a sunny day with a very low chance of precipitation.
Regional barometric pressure
About 1026–1028 hPa, relatively high, with a slight downward trend in the afternoon (Port Hope regional data).
Wind
Light to moderate, first north to northeast, then more south/southwest late in the day (Port Hope data).
Moon
Exact last quarter, reached around 9:25 a.m. About 51% illuminated, waning toward the October 10 new moon.

What this trip taught us

This trip was very different from our best September days. In late September, Chinook could still be spread across more accessible sections. By October 3, season rules legally concentrate anglers in certain lower sections, while some salmon have already moved higher up the tributaries.

Even so, three Chinook for three anglers shows there are still active, catchable fish in the legally open sections of Zone 17. All three fish were released.

For us, the most useful information isn’t just the catch count: it’s starting to compare date, regulations, pressure, temperature, moon, water level and number of salmon observed from one trip to the next.
