In Oshawa, air temperature ranged from about 11 °C in the morning to 19 °C in the afternoon, with high pressure around 1033–1034 hPa. The moon was a waxing gibbous at 97.3% illumination. On September 24, 2026, two anglers had an exceptional day during the fall Chinook salmon run in southern Ontario: 11 Chinook landed in a Zone 17 river, plus one more Chinook caught directly in Lake Ontario.

In total: 12 Chinook salmon for two anglers in a single trip.

The exact river is intentionally kept confidential, but the trip took place in the corridor of Lake Ontario tributaries between Port Hope, Cobourg, Bowmanville and Oshawa, an area known for its fall salmon migration.

Lake Ontario Chinook stage near river mouths in late summer and early fall before entering tributaries to spawn. The Government of Ontario also notes that Chinook become very aggressive and territorial when they run up rivers in the fall.

Why we record these conditions

This report documents a productive day under a specific set of conditions: high pressure, clear skies, east wind, a nearly full moon and late September, with Chinook already in the tributaries.

A single trip obviously can't show that any of these conditions causes better fishing. The point is to keep the data and compare it with future trips.
